The Sales and Services Tax (SST) is a consumption tax that replaced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Malaysia, effective from 1st September 2018. It is a tax imposed on the sale and provision of taxable goods and services in Malaysia. As a business owner, if you provide taxable goods or services and your annual sales exceed RM500,000, you are required to register for SST.
The first step to SST registration is determining whether your business is liable to register. If your business meets the threshold, you can proceed with the registration process. The registration process can be done online through the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) website. You will need to provide information such as your business details, nature of business, and estimated taxable turnover.
After submitting the application, the RMCD will process the application and issue a certificate of registration. Once registered, businesses are required to charge SST on their taxable supplies and submit periodic SST returns to the RMCD. Registering for SST in Malaysia is not only mandatory, but it also plays a significant role in managing the economy. SST is an important source of revenue for the Malaysian government, and as such, failing to register or comply with the regulations can result in serious consequences.
If a business fails to register for SST when it is required to do so, it can be subject to a penalty of up to RM30,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or both, under the SST Act 2018. In addition to this, businesses that do not comply with SST regulations can be penalized with fines, interest, and additional taxes.
It is important to note that businesses that have previously registered for GST must also register for SST, even if their annual sales do not exceed RM500,000. Failing to do so can result in fines and penalties as well.
